Similar to deep machine learning, more classical machine learning techniques will be applied to biotech data. Research here will be focused on three main topics, namely (1) the influence of missing data on statistical procedures; (2) extraction of relevant information from imaging data (e.g., medical or microscopic images) with special attention to develop automated and robust procedures based on statistical learning (e.g., automated cell recognition, anomaly detection, or automated plant phenotyping); and (3) the analysis of big data such as in the field of personalized medicine, where (predictive) research in metagenomics (such as classification of diseases based on RNA-seq data) can be envisioned.
